DC Armstrong was in Elie. Well, not exactly, in Elie, a couple of miles outside it in Shell Bay where the caravan park was. It was an hour and a halfâs drive from Glasgow so especially at night Mackay could easily have made the journey there and back and killed Porter in four or five hours. Well within the time his wife hadnât seen him, thought Armstrong.
Armstrong had driven through with two uniformed officers. He had obtained the directions to the caravan and the key from Angela Mackay. He let the officers into the caravan. It was a static van with a covered veranda at one end facing the sea with a metal table and chairs to sit outside on in good weather. It wasnât good weather now. The rain was sweeping in off the bay but he could imagine that over the summer months this would be a nice spot. He stood and admired the view. There was a view of the bay with a patch of grass before a curving stretch of golden sand, gentle waves lapping the shore.
He knew Fife reasonably well. He and his wife often came through to visit Annabel, his daughter, in St Andrews and sometimes stopped off for lunch at Lower Largo, Anstruther or Crail. Heâd also often come through golfing with his mates and had played at several courses along the coast but he hadnât been here before. It seemed incredibly peaceful. Probably not like that in the school holidays, though.
Inside the caravan the officers were already at work, searching through drawers and wardrobes. He was surprised by how spacious and comfortable it was inside. In fact, the rooms looked no different to those you might find in any flat or house. It was fully carpeted throughout and the décor was tasteful. Itâs a bit different from the caravans we stayed in when Annabel was small, he thought. They were poky and damp. He remembered one particularly dismal Easter week spent in the Lake District when it rained non-stop. The living room was bright and spacious, one wall being the sliding doors leading out to the veranda. There was a three-seater couch, an armchair, a gas fire, some units and a wide-screen television.
He left them to it and headed over to the bar. It was like a barn. There was a stage where no doubt sometimes entertainment was provided â he could imagine a two-piece band playing hits from the 60s and 70s and the place packed with holidaymakers. He tried to see it on that Saturday night, packed with people there for the weekend, the football on one screen, music playing elsewhere. It would be easy not to be noticed. Everyone on the site would go there as there wasnât another pub for miles. Public transport late at night was non-existent so youâd have to rely on taxis to get you back.
Had Mackay really been in here on the Saturday night? Armstrong carried a copy of a photograph that had been taken of Mackay at the station.
